Top 5 Music Production Software Applications

These days, music production relies heavily on digital software. Some of the most successful music producers have been known to use little more than a laptop and a few pieces of audio equipment to produce some of the most popular songs today, and the use of music production software is certainly not limited to any one genre.

If you’re an aspiring music producer, you’ll have to be familiar with a few applications that most other producers use:

Ableton

Ableton has been one of the pillars of the music industry ever since its introduction into the business in 1999. In addition to its vastly efficient layout and unlimited multi-track editing, one of the major benefits of using Ableton is the software’s ability to seamlessly process MIDI sequences.

As music production software, Ableton is also popular among music producers because of its ease of use for live performances.

Avid Pro Tools

Avid Pro Tools is widely regarded as the quintessential music production software for professional music producers. Many music schools exist solely to teach students how to use Pro Tools, and for good reason. With Pro Tools, you could basically create an entire discography with very few third-party applications, if any.

For an excellent quick primer on this software, check out Recording Revolution’s REthink Pro Tools course here.

The mere fact that Pro Tools is popular among industry professionals should be reason enough to learn how to use it, although it does come with a steep learning curve, and you’ll want to invest heavily into familiarizing yourself with it before you do anything else.

Fruity Loops

Although Fruity Loops is usually seen as a “beginner” application for many producers, many successful music producers still continue to use it throughout their careers. Fruity Loops includes all the major functions that a music software should include, such as cutting, looping, time-shifting and correcting, as well as large sound packs for producers to start working with right out of the box.

Fruity Loops is also very cost-efficient, being one of the most affordable yet capable of the music production software applications on the market today.

Apple Logic Pro

As far as music production software goes, Apple Logic Pro is a behemoth, which is why most producers should have a general idea what they’re doing before they decide to use it. The advanced functions alone would overwhelm any beginners, but they’re worth learning.

Some of Apple Logic Pro’s functions include a MIDI creation tool that allows users to create MIDI tracks using only a mouse, as well as track consolidation tools and a programmable arpeggiator. Given its learning curve, we wouldn’t recommend Apple Logic Pro for newcomers in the industry, but that certainly isn’t to say that it isn’t worth taking the time to learn.

Apple Garageband

Garageband is one of the most popular digital audio workstations among musicians and producers. Its interface is simply and easy to use, and is perfect for musicians who simply want to record their music.

Garageband helps users visualize the music being recorded, and still offers many of the essential functions that most other music production software applications provide. However, the best part about Garageband is that it’s free to use, if you’re a Mac user.
